This article shows DVU users how to manage a wave picket with the cart picking to carton option. Follow these steps:
-
Create orders
-
Create a wave pick ticket
-
Cartonize the order
-
Build a cart with the RF scanner
-
Release the cart to the floor (pick and pack)
-
Close out the ticket
Creating orders
-
Create shipping orders on the DVU platform.
-
Leave orders in Open status.
-
Do not generate pick tickets.
Note To simplify the demonstration, this example uses six shipping orders.
Create a wave pick ticket
Next, consolidate the shipping orders into a wave pick ticket.
Go to Home > Warehouse > Wave Pick Tickets. Click the plus icon.
-
Go to the top of the page and select an account.
-
Check the Run Cart Wave box.
-
Click the Refresh icon to see current shipping orders.
-
Use the search tool to filter the results and only show the orders to be consolidated.
Tip Intelligent filtering and sorting are the keys to building efficient carts. Search for item groupings at common warehouse locations or aisles.
Consolidate
Next, use the mouse to select the rows for this wave pick ticket. Then go to the top right corner of the page and click Save.
After saving, Davinci removes the selected rows. The DVU user can now click the X in the top right corner of the page to return to the main wave pick ticket page. After closing the window, Davinci shows the current wave pick ticket(s) on the main page.
Note DVU supports order consolidation. If an order is multi-carton or multi-poly mailer, the order can be split into multiple carts and combined at the carrier staging location or a specific order consolidation location if required.
Opening cartonization
After DVU builds the wave, a new page displays.
-
Click the Set For Cartonization button. A new page displays.
-
Set configuration settings. (see below)
-
Highlight rows to cartonize.
-
Click the Cartonization icon.
Configuration settings
-
Do not check Create Pick Ticket box.
-
Check the Print Carton Contents box. Typically, this label is required and can be applied to the outside of the carton or poly-mailer when shipping. Optionally, peel back a corner of the label and apply it to a carton flap for scanning.
-
If the order is a small parcel, this is required.
-
Select a label printer or print to PDF in the browser. (optional)
-
Select all lines and then click the Cartonize button. Labels are printed in collated fashion. For example, if both carton contents and small parcel label checkboxes are selected, and 20 cartons are generated, 40 labels are generated (two labels per carton). The labels are in sequence pairs of carton contents + small parcel.
Building a cart
Next, build the cart. That means adding various carton sizes and shelf configurations to handle the requirements of the wave pick ticket.
DVU can dynamically support carts with different configurations (e.g. number of shelves, carton sizes, etc.). During one pick, the cart might have 4 shelves with 42 small cartons. During the next pick, the same cart can have 2 shelves with 8 large cartons.
-
It is common for trained warehouse staff to build carts. This allows the team members to physically look at cart configurations, attach the sequenced labels, and determine how many cartons or poly-mailers should be on a particular cart.
In this step, floor staff assign slot locations on the cart to carton IDs. The number of slots on the cart depends on the number of orders (i.e. carton IDs) in the wave pick ticket.
Note Floor staff must build a cart when the location is empty. For example, if CART-1 is selected to build a cart, staff must empty or delete items before CART-1 can be used again.
Scanner workflow
Log in to the RF scanner.
Select Shipping (2)
Select Pick (1).
Select By Cart (8).
Select Make Pick Cart (1).
Scan the cart.
Scan the first carton ID.
Scan or enter a slot number.
Scan the next carton ID.
Scan or enter the next slot number.
Repeat the steps for all remaining carton IDs and slots. When complete, enter D for done.
Picking and Packing
After staff build the cart with the scanner, the cart can be released to the warehouse floor for picking and packing. Carts can be pre-built and then released to the warehouse floor at the appropriate time.
To release the cart for picking, follow the normal process of setting the wave pick ticket to In Process status.
-
Select the row(s).
-
Click the ellipsis and select Batch Edit Status.
-
Select In Process.
Davinci changes the row color to green to indicate in process.
RF scanner workflow
With the wave pick ticket status set to In Process, the floor staff can pick and pack.
Move through the wave pick ticket following the normal process for picking. The only difference is that after each pick line, the scanner tells the picker to pack a specific item code into specific cartons or poly-mailers on slots.
Select Shipping (2).
Select Pick (1).
Select By Cart (8)
Select Pack Pick Cart (2).
Select the wave pick ticket and then Continue Picking (1).
The next screen shows pick information, including the cart ID. Enter (1) to continue.
The next shows the item codes and quantities to pick. Select an item.
Scan the item’s location.
Scan the LPN (if available) or select Enter.
Scan the SKU or UPC.
After you select your SKU/UPC, the system prompts the user to scan for all quantities included across all orders. In this case, it is one each
Next, the scanner tells the user where to place each item. In this example, it is slot 3 with cartoon ID 1260700.
The next screen says the quantity for that slot.
The cycle continues with the next item. Repeat the steps until the pick completes
Next, scan a location for the cart (i.e. packing area).
Finally, close out the Wave Pick out. Staff can seal and pack the orders and then move them to the final location (e.g. staging area or shipping bin). The cart should be clear of all orders and ready to use for another pick-to-carton job.
