A storage location is any space inside the warehouse that holds inventory. Defining storage locations on the DVU platform generally involves four steps:
-
create a location with a unique identifier
-
set rules with location type options
-
set the inventory status options
-
configure other settings
Note If the warehouse uses barcodes, each storage location needs to be barcoded.
Creating a location
WDG recommends using an alphanumeric location identifier, such as A01B01B. The number of characters in the identifier that might work best for your deployment should reflect the amount and type of storage available in your local warehouse environment (e.g. number of zones, bays, aisles, levels, or slots).
-
Open the Storage Locations page (Home > Warehouse > Storage Locations).
-
Click the plus
icon to create a new record.
-
Make sure the Enabled box is checked.
-
Add a unique identifier. (required)
-
Add a description. (optional but recommended)
-
Fill in fields as needed.
-
Click Save.
Note A zone is an area that can hold similar items from different accounts (e.g. a cool area or heated area). If applicable, configure warehouse zones at the account and warehouse level.
Defining location type
Use the Location Type section to define which warehouse activity(ies) can and cannot take place in the location. Often these choices have an impact on upstream warehouse activities. For instance, if a DVU user unchecks the Pick/Allocation box for a specific location, the inventory in that location cannot be assigned to any future shipping order.
-
Go to the Location Type section.
-
Enable or disable any combination of location types.
-
Click Save.
WMS Location Types are as follows:
-
Receiving Dock - Location for product at the dock door.
-
Receiving Stage - Check in and prepare product for bulk/rack storage here.
-
Bulk Storage/Put away - Locations for bulk storage.
-
Rack Storage/Put away - Locations for rack storage.
-
Pick/Allocation - Warehouse staff pick product here.
-
Project - Store product that is part of a project order here. Use this setting, for instance, when creating totes on a cart that can be used for single item, single quantity scan packs.
-
Shipping Stage - Stage product prior to leaving the warehouse here. Usually, the final scan location in outbound processes before loading onto a truck leaving the warehouse.
-
Shipping Dock - Place product waiting for pick-up here.
Setting inventory status
These settings define the types of inventory status that a DVU user can place in the location. Use the checkboxes to enable or disable the status type options.
Tip A shipping stage holds picked orders that are ready to ship out of the warehouse. This location should not allow inventory marked with a Hold, Damaged, or Quarantined status.
Available - Product that is in sellable or shippable condition to fulfill orders.
Hold - Product pending approval for availability.
Damaged - Product that cannot be used to fulfill orders.
Quarantine - Commonly used to hold product that requires quality assurance.
Configuring other settings
In most cases, the default values for these settings should be adequate.
Item Velocity
WDG recommends the default setting Any/Unknown.
On Relocate
If warehouse staff move inventory from one location to another location (using the DVU Relocation tool), DVU users can automate a change to the inventory status (i.e. available, hold, damaged, or quarantined) and unit of measurement (i.e. each, case or inner pack). The default setting is Do Not Change.
Inventory Type
Use this feature to limit the type of inventory that warehouse staff can lace in a location. The default setting is all types (each, case, and LPN).
