This article shows DVU users and staff how to scan and pack inventory at a packing station. In addition to packing, the associate can verify the item and quantity match the order by looking at the documents and the item image that appears on the screen in the packing station. For that reason, DVU suggests the warehouse team assigns different people to pick and pack the order.

To open the Scan Pack module on DVU, go to Home > Warehouse.
Processing a scan pack order
Generally, packing orders is a nine-step process:
-
Enter the packing station ID (i.e. project location).
-
Select a printer. (Complete this step once per work session.)
-
Use the drop-down menu to select an LPN location.
-
Select a scanning option and scale mode. DVU currently supports the Fairbanks USB scale. Contact DVU support to learn more about scale options
-
Scan a barcode (e.g. a packing list or tote).
-
Check print document options.
-
Select carton stock.
-
Scan items.
-
Close the order or close the carton.
1. Set the packing location ID
The packer logs in with the name of the packing station (e.g. pk3).
2. Set the LPN location
Clicks the plus button on the screen to generate an LPN for the packed order.
3. Select a scanning option
Choose one of four scanning options on the screen.
-
Standard Packing - This is the default option. The instructions for this option are below.
-
Manifest Only - Follow the below instructions with one change. Instead of scanning the packing list barcode, scan the carton ID. This step prints the labels for a carton that has already been packed and is useful when the routing (carrier) is not known when packing. For example, you could use cartonization and only print carton contents. Then later, use this feature to print UCC128 and/or small parcels.
-
Tote Consolidation - Select this option when picking staff deliver a cart of totes to the packing station. Scan the tote barcode instead of a packing list and complete the instructions below.
Note For Tote Consolidation, use totes with the storage Location Type set to Project.
-
Single Line, Qty 1 - Choose this option when an order has 1) one item and 2) one line entry. It’s a time-saving option if there or multiple orders with the same single item because there is no need to print out a scan packing list for each order. Everything can be verified visually. Click here to see an example of the workflow.
4. Scan a barcode
Scan a barcode to display order information on the packing station screen. The barcode type depends on the scanning option (e.g. packing list, barcode, etc.).
If barcodes are used to scan packing lists or pack labels, they are printed at the wave or order level. They are typically given to the picker, and the picker drops these with the inventory at the end of the pack station.
-
If the packer selects Standard Packing or Single Line, Qty 1, scan the packing list. If the packing list is not available, print that document from the screen.
-
If the packer selects Manifest Only, scan the carton ID. With this barcode mode, packing station staff do not pack the carton. This option simply prints the labels for a carton that has already been packed. This is useful when the routing (carrier) is not known when packing. For example, you could use cartonization and only print carton contents. Then later, use this feature to print UCC128 and/or small parcel labels.
-
If the packer selects Tote Consolidation, scan the barcode on the tote.
After scanning, the packing station screen displays order information.
5. Check print document options
The four checkboxes (next to the To Be Packed section) enable label printing. Each enabled label automatically prints out after the packer closes the order.
-
Be sure to select a printer for the label and letter printer.
Note Enable or disable each printer at the account level (Accounts > Shipping page > Defaults section).
6. Select carton stock
Tap the screen and select a carton size for the order. Optionally, packers can create a custom carton.
Tip To save time, create a page with a barcode for each carton type in the station. After adding a scanned carton, the screen shows a carton ID.
7. Scan items
Now that the prep work is complete, the packer can scan items. The screen keeps a running total of items scanned and pending. It also shows the weight of scanned items.
When the scan is complete, the screen moves the carton to the Pack Compete table.
8. Close carton or Close list
If the order has another carton to pack, the packer should:
-
scan the Close carton barcode (in the packing station) and repeat the steps to pack the next carton.
After the packer completes all cartons, the packer should:
-
scan the Close packing list barcode (in the packing station).
Verifying on the UI
DVU users can verify a closed order on the UI.
Open the shipping order and check the status on the General page. The status should read Shipped (if this option is enabled on the Accounts > Shipping page).
Click Packed Cartons on the side menu. The page displays inventory information, the number of cartons, and the final storage location of the order.
